How Often Should Men Get a Haircut? A Schedule by Style

How often should men get a haircut? It depends on the style: every two to three weeks for fades and very short cuts, every four to six weeks for classic medium-length styles, and every six to eight weeks for longer hair. The shorter and sharper the cut, the sooner it starts to look grown out.

Why the schedule changes with length

Hair grows roughly half an inch a month on average. On a longer cut, half an inch barely registers. On a skin fade, where the shortest part sits close to bare skin, the same growth turns a crisp blend fuzzy in a week or two.

That is the whole rule of thumb: the closer a cut is to the skin, the faster it shows growth.

A simple schedule by style

  • Skin fades, bald fades and buzz cuts: every 2 to 3 weeks
  • Tapers, crew cuts and short textured crops: every 3 to 4 weeks
  • Classic medium cuts, side parts and comb-overs: every 4 to 6 weeks
  • Longer styles: every 6 to 8 weeks, mainly to clean up the ends and keep the shape
  • Growing it out: a cleanup around the ears and neckline every 6 to 8 weeks, so the in-between stage looks like a choice

Signs you're overdue

Your calendar is a guess. Your hair tells the truth. You're probably due if:

  • your hair won't sit the way you style it, no matter how much product you use
  • the hair at the back of your neck is creeping toward your collar
  • your ears are starting to disappear
  • the fade has a visible shelf where the smooth blend used to be
  • you're wearing a cap more often than you'd like to admit

Don't forget the beard

A beard runs on its own clock. Most guys tidy up at home every week or so, then let a barber reshape it and redefine the lines every two to four weeks. Booking your beard and your haircut together is the easy option, because the two should blend into each other anyway.

A beard trim and lineup uses scissors, clippers and a straight razor to shape the beard and define a clean neckline. If you want both at once, the haircut and beard service covers the full job in one visit.

How to make a cut last longer

  • Work with your growth pattern. A good barber cuts around cowlicks and the crown instead of fighting them, so the shape holds as it grows.
  • Choose a softer fade. A low taper, or a fade that stops at a short guard, grows out more gracefully than a high skin fade.
  • Use the right product. A light matte paste or cream can disguise a week or two of growth.
  • Keep your neck tidy. A clean neckline makes the whole cut look fresher for longer.

Timing a cut for a big day

Wedding, job interview, graduation photos? Don't get your hair cut the morning of. A fresh cut can look a touch too sharp for the first day or two, and if something needs adjusting, you want time to fix it.

For most styles, three to five days before the event is the sweet spot. The cut has settled, the lines still look crisp, and nobody can tell you were in the chair that week. For a skin fade, go a little closer, two or three days out, so the blend is still at its best when the cameras come out.

Book a standing time

The easiest way to stick to a schedule is to book your next cut before you leave the shop. Pick the rhythm that matches your style and put it in your calendar. No more "I'll go next week" for six weeks straight.
